Saral Design works on a menstruator-led, community-based program that takes a three-pronged approach to: 1. eradicate the stigma surrounding menstruation 2. provide livelihood opportunities to low-income women 3. ensure access to affordable sanitary napkins in low-income communities
Describe about your innovation
Our Innovation: We developed world’s first fully automatic sanitary pad producing machine called SWACHH. SWACHH has 2 Indian design patents. With decentralization, we cut down the cost of distribution, while automatic production ensures sustainable unit economics, high quality product at half the price of multinational brands. In last 5 years, we developed a range of Swachh machines of different production capacities and add-ons, allowing customized solutions for every community. SWACHH is ideal for solving the problem of access, availability of sanitary pads in low income communities and has been instrumental in creating entrepreneurship, employment opportunities as well. Our “Business in a Box” model solves local problem in following manner: A local entrepreneur/ not for profit/ women’s group/ Govt entity (Machine Partner) purchases SWACHH unit to produce affordable high quality sanitary pads (via debt, equity or grant financing). We help them in loan applications and availing government subsidies. Machine Partner is given an all-round training including machine operations, quality control, inventory management, unit economics, financial projections, sales, marketing etc. Our maintenance services are available starting from installation to online video call based and in person visits. The service is extendable via an Annual Maintenance Contract. We provide training to build a last mile women driven distribution network and co-creating awareness content for communities with a gender lens. Local women who are trained in last mile sales and MHM education are called “Sangini”(companion)
