Your innovation in brief
Founder of Vidya Subramanian Academy (VSA), a top ranked school for online learning of Carnatic music and other traditional arts with a rapidly growing body of over 1500 students spread across India and 30+ countries. Online classes in Carnatic and Hindusthani vocal, instrumental (flute, kanjira, mrudangam, veena, violin), Sanskrit & Tamil chants & language, konnakkol, Bharatanatyam. Diverse student body, including students from rural and Tier 2 cities in India, those with special needs and foreigners. VSA run with socio-commercial focus on empowering women artists & teachers to successfully share their knowledge in the online platform. Specialized training module for teachers enables them to leverage modern technology to teach ancient arts. Vidya has empowered nearly 100 women artists (located across India) and given them work-from-home opportunities. She also shares her knowledge freely with students who cannot afford to pay through her YouTube channel and podcasts.
Describe about your innovation
Vidya identifies skilled teachers. Every teacher at VSA is a home-based freelancer. She has so far financially empowered nearly 100 women artists across India. Equipped with confidence & training, teachers each earn between Rs 10000 to Rs 2 lakh p.m. Using a social entrepreneurship model, she has consciously opted for lower income for herself and better livelihood for teachers. She welcomes everyone, irrespective of age, religion, gender and socio-economic status. Our diverse student body includes trans-women, students with special challenges including autism, cerebral palsy & blindness and foreigners. Bringing together the first online platform in the world to offer customized music, dance, sloka and language lessons with a non-discriminatory approach has been her unique contribution. This blend of art and tech has created terrific social impact, as recognized by FICCI / Niti Aayog in Road to GES, Chennai 2017, Kalaimamani Award 2018, CA Entrepreneur Award 2019 and Homepreneur Award 2018. • Women empowerment : creation of work-from-home opportunities for talented teachers ; training and creation of regular income stream through online, work-from-home opportunities; especially significant in today’s post-COVID scenario. • Enabler for students: Students with special needs have found lessons therapeutic. Students have a diverse religious as well as cultural background. Vidya has reached 1000s through free video lessons. A significant number of students are first generation art learners, including of non Indian background. • The world’s first online platform to offer customized lessons to create terrific social impact, as recognized by several awards • A non judgmental and non discriminatory approach
